Intramural Sports Cancelled

Dear Griffins,

I hope this finds you all well and healthy. With the COVID-19 spreading, and in accordance with the larger GHNO mandates, intramural practices and games are cancelled until restrictions are lifted, and prudence deems it right to proceed. I will update you all about the next steps GHNO will make about the season's future in the coming week. Stay healthy!

All the best,

Ben Corcoran

TACOS and SNACKS

Griffins,

The sophomore class is fundraising for their Senior Trip to Washington D.C. They will sell breakfast tacos from Eddies Taco House (I've had them, and they are delicious!) and doughnuts and other tasty concessions.

They will be providing for us through all our basketball games. Cash is best. Venmo is also accepted.

Go Griffins!

Archery Delay and Ineligibility

Good morning, Griffins!

We have had a setback with our archery certification training, so signups will not go out this week as we planned. I will update you all as soon as we reschedule the training.

Ineligibility emails have went out, so please check for those.

Go Griffins!

Sincerely,

Ben

New Blog Look

Good morning, Griffins!

You may have noticed the new blog look. Nothing fundamental has changed, just that this layout allows for continuous scrolling through all the posts. I hope that expedites finding information.

The other major new feature is the pages bar at the top. These pages will hold the most essential and logistical information. Though these pages are not posts and will remain mostly static, please check back frequently for added info about the season calendar, practice schedule, coaches contacts, etc.

All the best,

Benjamin Corcoran

Shirt Link, New Coaches, and Dress Code Update

One Shirt Link, Two Coaches, and Three Notes

Good morning, Griffins,

Here is the shirt link for purchasing intramural shirts. CLICK!

Welcome to our girls Pevensies coach, Mrs. Lopez! Mrs. Lopez has coached for several seasons with us now, and we are happy to have her again.

And welcome Mrs. Rodriguez, our girls Oakenshield coach. Mrs. Rodriguez is one of our kinder teachers, and she has two young athletes who have experienced the intramural sports program, and we are excited for what she brings to our program.

There will be NO GAME during Easter Week -- Saturday, April 11. That was a mistake. We will not reschedule it. I will update the PDF calendar to reflect this as soon as I can. The calendar is public now, so you do not need to request access!

Some have wondered how one gets off the waitlist. One must wait for a spot to open before they can take a spot on the team. It all depends on what spaces are available, and Mr. Corcoran cannot create extra spaces. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to me.

A quick amendment to the dress code for practice: please have your scholar-athletes wear sleeved shirts. Sleeves, frankly, make for a more sanitary practice with all the sweating. Thank you!

All the best,

Ben Corcoran

Basketball Calendar

Basketball Pre-Release Letter

 Spring Intramural Season: Basketball

Dear Griffin Parents,

Welcome to the third and final season of athletic intramural games of GHNO 2019-2020! This will be a wonderful season. Basketball is a bit different this year from last, so please note the attached general calendar on the blog and as listed below. There are items that I highlighted for helpful reminders leading into the season's start, but everything written here is important.

Thank you and go Griffins!

Game Schedule

Games 1: Feb. 29
Games 2: Mar. 07
Games 3: Mar. 28
Games 4: Apr. 11
Games 5: Apr. 25
Championships: May 02

Precise times for each team is TBD. Stay tuned! And follow the blog! Boys and girls will take turns playing in the morning, similar to how we ran soccer games week to week.

An important reminder about Saturday games: all children must be in the care of their parents or whomever is watching them. On game days, coaches are coaching their team; they are not watching or tracking any students or athletes. Kindly always keep an eye on your scholar-athletes .

There will be a cost of $100 for the season. Many students already have an intramural jersey from a previous intramural season. They are to continue to use this jersey for basketball. In the event that a new jersey is needed or this is the first time playing intramurals, please choose the $10 Intramural t-shirt option in Configio (it is a separate page than the signup for the season.)

Please only purchase a shirt if you are participating in intramurals this season.

We will attempt to keep to the schedule that follows, but the schedule is subject to change to meet the school needs. Please look for any changes on the blog or if you need to find any details about the program.

Practice Schedule

Boys practice Monday and Wednesday 3:35-4:35
Girls practice Tuesday and Thursday 3:35-4:35

Girls Coaches:
Baggins: Ms. Laura Kaiser
Oakenshield: TBA
Reepicheep: Maureen Milligan
Pevensies: TBA

Boys Coaches:
Baggins: Mr. Matthew Lucero
Oakenshield: Mr. Jeremy Fasenmyer
Reepicheep: Mr. Nathaniel Eberlein
Pevensies: Mr. Mike Conrad

All teams will be picked-up from practice on the West Lot (upper school lot). Please remember that the West Lot closes at 4:10pm. Please do not arrive for intramural pick-up until 4:30. Students will take 5 minutes to gather their things and walk out, anyway. You are welcome to park and pick up your student on the field. If students are not picked up within fifteen minutes after practice is complete, they will be checked into Athenaeum (Homework Club).

All practices are closed practices. You are welcome to park in the lot to wait. That also means that siblings and anyone not directly involved with intramurals or school activities will need to leave the gymnasium (students will be checked into Athaneum).

Athletic Dress and Modesty:

Practice clothing is expected to be solid in color. There ought to be a distinction between the school uniform from practice clothing. This means that students should not show up to practice in their uniform. Their participation may be reduced if the coach sees the need to correct a habitual negligence of changing into practice gear.

On game days, their intramural shirt is required. Athletes must pair their intramural shirt with modest shorts and non-marking gym shoes. “Modest”, as a general rule, means shorts whose length is not above the index finger when hands are relaxed by the side; and that extend below the knee by no more than two inches. They should not be so tight as to be revealing. We want to encourage all the students to practice modesty in the sense of not drawing attention to themselves. Therefore, under the same sense of modesty, athletes should not wear socks, shoes, or any other item of clothing that is flashy or pop-culture or with excessive brand advertising. The goal is simplicity. And in that simplicity, we hope to create a freer and more focused space for students to practice their skill and hone their competitive spirit.

Expectations and Eligibility:

Student athletes must be eligible to participate by maintaining passing grades, passing a physical examination (see forms on the signup page) and demonstrating excellent moral choices in the classroom and during practice. Our student athletes are students first and must take care of their academics -- whether that is class work, make up work, or disciplinary action -- before they are allowed to practice or play. Please see the bold words below. When students drop below a passing grade they will be asked to sit out until they have demonstrated they are no longer in danger of failing. If students receive a suspension or more than three detentions within the week of (or preceding) a game they will be suspended from playing in that game.

In addition to maintaining passing grades, all students must have passing grades BEFORE they sign up. If you know your student is failing any subject, please refrain from signing them up. Our commitment to academics, the limited space on each team, and the growing interest in the program require this. If your athlete is found to be failing during the first eligibility check on February 20, they will be kicked from the team and surrender their spot on their team to someone who is on the waitlist. You will receive a full refund, and be put on the wait list. If your athlete is found to be academically ineligible by the second eligibility check on March 25, he or she will have to cease attending practice and games. They will have to bring their grades up by April 20 in order to participate again.

Check 1: Feb. 20
Check 2: Mar. 25
Check 3: Apr. 20

Playing time is determined by participation in practice, coachability, and effort. Coaches will seek to find fair playing time for each student, but if students are missing practice, or showing up unprepared to practice, they may lose out on this privilege. We ask that students commit to the sport and are not on multiple teams or splitting their time between activities. There will be some students who have been playing basketball for years and others who are picking up the sport for the first time. Please realize that this is not an advanced basketball training camp, but that we focus on FUNdamentals, sportsmanship, and winning and losing with humility. GHNO will have highly competitive middle school and high school sports. We want to offer a community and cultural building activity with intramurals. We expect students to competitively play with thumos, but to have fun and learn a love for the sport and teamwork.

Basketball will be not conflict with archery or Mathlete intramurals. Details are still being ironed out. Archery and Mathletes may  have to conflict, however.

Thank you all for reading! Please do reach out with any questions or concerns!
